Profile
While growing up in Ontario, Ryan most looked forward to annual ski trips to destinations in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec. In 2016, freshly printed bachelor’s degree in hand, Ryan did what any reasonable eastern ski bum would do: move West. Upon finishing his undergraduate degree in Legal Studies and Business at the University of Waterloo, Ryan made the move to the Canadian Rockies in pursuit of living a balanced professional life in a mountain town. After spending a couple years working in tourism, he decided to attend law school at the University of Calgary.
Despite being a student for nearly a decade, Ryan has extensive and diverse professional experience. During his undergraduate degree, Ryan earned highly competitive business co-op positions with leading companies such as Microsoft, Scotiabank, Gowling WLG, DundeeWealth and AGF Investments. While at law school, Ryan volunteered with Pro Bono Students Canada and Student Legal Assistance, and was an executive member of the Environmental Law Society. Between his first and second year of law school, he worked as a full-time caseworker for a Calgary-based non-profit poverty clinic where he represented low income clients in areas of criminal, family, municipal and civil law. In addition to being a caseworker, Ryan held the non-profit’s executive position as the criminal early case resolution coordinator, where he was in charge of negotiating resolutions with the Crown Prosecution Service for all of the organization’s criminal matters.
Ryan spent his second law school summer working at a small full-service law firm in Canmore, Alberta, where he gained legal experience in corporate and commercial, estate planning and administration, labour and employment, real estate, and civil enforcement. Due to his passion for living in a mountain town, he continued to live in Canmore through his final year of law school, balancing school, pro bono casework, legal project work for his Canmore firm, and nearly 50 days on skis.
Ryan joined Race & Company in 2020 as an articled student and is now an associate lawyer practicing in the areas of personal injury, family law and civil litigation. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Alpine Club of Canada and Squamish Off-Road Cycling Society.
Outside of the office, Ryan can be found skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, trail running, climbing and hiking.
